The Full Story

Our Inspiration

​

My name is Louise Okomo, I am the President and Founder of the M & J Foundation. I started this organization with the purpose of serving and providing aide to underserved children in Africa, specifically in South of Cameroon where I was born and raised. The inspiration for this organization came from my granddaughter Jholie. At a young age, Jholie would often give me the toys and clothes that she had outgrew and would ask me to give them to the kids in Cameroon so that they could enjoy the items as much as she did.  In January 2018, at the age of 16, Jholie was taken from this world.  Me and my family went through overwhelming sadness, grief and anger after that tragedy.  In memory of Jholie, and to continue with the spirit of giving that she showed in the short time that she was in this world, I started M & J Foundation in her honor. I redirected my energy towards helping the children in the beloved country of my birth & upbringing Cameroon, Africa, which is what Jholie would have wanted.

Our Mission

​

Our mission is to help the children and families in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. This area of Cameroon is called the Océan District and it includes the villages in and around the major cities of Kribi, Akom II, Bipindi, Campo, Lokundje, Lolodorf, Mvengue, Niete, and my home village in Ngovanyang. We started our first year by providing children in several schools in the region with some of the basic needs that so many of us take for granted. This included backpacks, school supplies, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair care products, soap, underwear, shoes and socks. The following year, along with the school and hygiene supplies, we also I provided lunch for several schools in the district which included with Mac and cheese, fried fish, fried chicken, beignets, chips, soda, bottled water and hand wipes.  We would ship all the supplies from the United States two months in advance and coordinated with the schools, churches, priests and village leaders to ensure that the aid reaches the children that need it. Providing food, clothes, and supply aid is our number one mission, but these are just the start of what we want to accomplish.

Our Goals

Our goal is to provide quality of life improvements to the children, families, and villages of the Océan District of Cameroon.  This includes building wells to help local community get renewable fresh water, distributing food, clothes, and supplies at schools, and lobbying public officials to extend paved roads and utility lines to some of the remote villages.  Our goal is to not only provide short term aid to the people of these small villages, but also serve as an advocate for their wellbeing and social improvement.
